چکیده

High-performance scientific applications are usually built from software modules written in multiple programming languages. This raises the issue of language interoperability which involves making calls between languages, converting basic types, and bridging disparate programming models. Babel provides a featurerich, extensible, high-performance solution to the language interoperability problem currently supporting C, C++, FORTRAN 77, Fortran 90/95, Fortran 2003/2008, Python, and Java. Babel supports object-oriented programming features and interface semantics with runtime-enforcement. In addition to in-process language interoperability, Babel includes remote method invocation to support hybrid parallel and distributed computing paradigms.

Language Interoperability for High-Performance Parallel Scientific Components

With the increasing complexity and interdisciplinary nature of scientific applications, code reuse is becoming increasingly important in scientific computing. One method for facilitating code reuse is the use of components technologies [16, 17, 91, which have been used widely in industry. However, components have only recently worked their way into scientific computing [2, 1, 11, 181. Language ...

Interfacing Chapel with traditional HPC programming languages

Chapel is a high-level parallel programming language that implements a partitioned global address space model (PGAS). Programs written in this programming model have traditionally been selfcontained entities written entirely in one language. While this approach enables the compiler to produce better performing code by doing whole program optimization, it also carries a risk of positioning PGAS ...

Toward The Automated Generation of Components from Existing Source Code

A major challenge to achieving widespread use of software component technology in scientific computing is an effective migration strategy for existing, or legacy, source code. This paper describes initial work and challenges in automating the identification and generation of components using the ROSE compiler infrastructure and the Babel language interoperability tool. Babel enables calling int...

Multilingual Interfaces for Parallel Coupling in Multiphysics and Multiscale Systems

Multiphysics and multiscale simulation systems are emerging as a new grand challenge in computational science, largely because of increased computing power provided by the distributed-memory parallel programming model on commodity clusters. These systems often present a parallel coupling problem in their intercomponent data exchanges. Another potential problem in these coupled systems is langua...

The CCA component model for high-performance scientific computing

The Common Component Architecture (CCA) is a component model for high-performance computing, developed by a grass-roots effort of computational scientists. Although the CCA is usable with CORBA-like distributed-object components, its main purpose is to set forth a component model for high-performance, parallel computing. Traditional component models are not well suited for performance and massi...
